Work With Me

School Visits

I'm available for school visits, either local to Phoenix or around the country. I love speaking to English classes, theatre groups, and creative writing clubs. As a professional playwright, I can provide a fascinating, real-world perspective on the writing life.

Here are the workshops I currently offer:
  • Careers in Writing
  • A Playwright's Journey, or 48 Years to Overnight Success
  • Five Ways to Punch Up Your Playwriting
  • Writing the 10-Minute Play
  • The Hero's Journey, or Why Star Wars and Barbie Are Really the Same Movie

Or I can tailor something specific to your specific needs.

I charge $950 for a full day of workshops or working with your students on their production. Travel and accommodations are extra.

Zoom Sessions

If an on-site visit is too pricey for your school, I'm also happy to do a Zoom session. For this, I can lead one of the workshops listed above (each lasts one hour), do a Q&A with your cast and crew, or offer notes on rehearsals. These sessions are $100 an hour.

Commissions

As a playwright, one of the most fulfilling things I do is work with schools to develop new plays that meet their specific needs. Rates are $800 for a short play (less than 30 minutes), $1200 for a one-act play (30 to 59 minutes) or $2000 for a full-length play (60 to 90 minutes).

You specify the cast size, setting, time period, theme--pretty much anything that's important to you. I write the play. You'll have frequent opportunities to read and offer feedback on early drafts of the script. And you get exclusive rights to perform the world premiere. My only requirement is that I keep all rights to the play after the premiere.

Of course, if the play gets published, your production will get world premiere credit in the script!

"Todd, we are immensely grateful that you could come to Leoti, KS, for this event, spending one day with our middle/high school students, and rehearsal with the cast. We learned so much, and we know you sparked a creative light in more than a few students. Thank you for this once in a lifetime experience, keep on writing those zany words, and we will look forward to doing this again!" - Janelle Downs, Director, Wichita County Arts Alliance, Leoti, KS.

"Mr. Wallinger's visit was a highlight of the year. He provided valuable real-world insights into the playwriting world in an entertaining and inspirational way. The students were highly involved and benefited greatly from his first-hand knowledge." - Jim Patrick, Drama Teacher, Pine Crest School, Fort Lauderdale, FL

"What a privilege and rare opportunity we had in both being taught and mentored by him...  His presented workshops with our school's Drama and English students in strategies of creative writing, incorporating a more structured pattern in plot structure through analysis of "The Hero's Journey," as well as him sharing his setbacks and successes of playwriting, were all inspiring... It was an experience I will never forget!" - Adrian McCracken, Drama Teacher, Hillcrest High School, Ammon, ID
